Download Gartner Magic Quadrant for Horizontal Portals

Few days back, Gartner released its Magic Quadrant for Horizontal Portals. Here is a quick description of scope of this MQ.

Gartner defines a portal as "a Web software infrastructure that provides interaction with relevant information assets (for example, information/content, applications and business processes), knowledge assets and human assets by select targeted audiences, delivered in a highly personalized manner." Enterprise portals may face different audiences, including:

  • Business-to-employee (B2E)
  • Business-to-consumer (B2C)
  • Business partners (B2B)

Of course, the public-sector corollaries to these three high-level audience types are also considered applicable. A portal product is a packaged software application that is used to create and maintain enterprise portals. These products can be used to design vertical or horizontal portals:

  • Vertical portals focus on accessing specific applications or business functions.
  • Horizontal portals integrate and aggregate information from multiple cross-enterprise applications, as well as specific line-of-business tools and applications.

Practical Career Tip : Reward yourself

image

Each one of us have few things on our ‘TO-DO’ list which we hate to do but we know that they need to be done. HBR shares few practical career tips on how to motivate yourself to do this task.

The one which I liked most is this one -

Pay yourself. Set up an account – a savings account, a gift card, an iTunes account – and pay into it every time you complete an especially challenging project. Set different dollar amounts depending on the size and unpleasantness of the task.

Career - Let the entrepreneurial spirit grow

TheNextWeb.com offers some tips on how to manage your time and efforts between your work and urge to work on new ideas. While the context of article is mainly about starting something of your own, its equally relevant in day to day work life where your interest in working on a topic is much higher than a task/topic you are supposed to work today. The more your work domain is different from your interest domain, the higher the challenges.

image

Here are the tips:

  • Don’t stop thinking and writing down ideas.
  • If you have set work hours, stick to them.
  • If you don’t have set work hours, make them.
  • Allot blocks of time dedicated only to coming up with, planning out, and developing your ideas.
  • Let the entrepreneurial spirit grow.

Starbucks Experience and Productivity

Recently came across this interesting video on how to improve customer interaction experience by influencing the productivity on customer side also. The author in this video talks about how Starbucks took a disruptive approach which may not be as customer friendly but improves overall service experience for both sides.

image

After watching this I realized, how much I have been practicing the same approach for many years during my career with my clients. I as a consultant mostly work with large enterprises which have many people to spend lot of time on long calls which can be done quickly. So to improve mine and their productivity, I mostly end up influencing their work style. What is your experience ?

IT and CIO : Journey and Future from Gartner

As part of its ongoing symposium, Gartner today published its point of view on what future holds for IT organizations and CIO. They have identified following four futures for CIOs.

  • IT as a Global Service Provider
  • IT as the Engine Room
  • IT ‘is’ the Business
  • Everyone’s IT

image

While Gartner sees them as four dominant futures, I see them more as four stages of their journey. My view goes like this:

Why traditional journalism is still so important ?

This is the next post in the series for ‘Content Curation’ :

image

With so much digital action happening in consumer world, digital curation is becoming utmost important. From individuals to marketing professionals, everyone wants perfect digital curation tools. Amongst all this, there is a question if traditional journalism and newspaper still delivers value.

The answer to this is absolute ‘YES’.

If you apply the Theory of Need and Want to digital curation world, you know that while digital curation tools address mostly the ‘Want’ part, the traditional journalism addresses mostly ‘Need’ part.

My recommendation, enterprises apart from adopting digital curation tools should also have a traditional journalism group within to help employees know what they need to know.

Content Curation Types

This is third post in Content Curation series.

You can read the previous two posts here:

  1. Content Curation in 5 Steps
  2. Content Curation Tools and examples

image

There are basically three types of curation engines:

Individual – This is the one which we all do to get best and add our part to it. We use Twitter, facebook, Google Reader, etc to aggregate best of content for our reading. We even share our curated content with others to consume.

Crowd – Yes, the wisdom of crowd. This is what you see on digg or trending topics on twitter.

Software – This is the only automated engine and is becoming more and more popular and efficient. These are the agents which continuously scan the web for popular and highly rated content. Two of the good examples are:

News gadget on iGoogle

image

www.LikeButton.com

image

Every type of engine has its own pros and cons. While the individuals can do a personalized curation, software based curation helps in discovering new content.

The goal is to create an engine which brings best of all three types.

Do you know of any such engine ?

Content Curation Tools and examples

image

Continuing to my earlier post on Content Curation in 5 Steps, here is list of some digital content curation tools. The list can be endless and so I have picked few popular ones.

Most of the tools come under one or more of the following categories

image

Twitter is an example of personal and aggregator content curation.

The Huffington Post is a great example of team of humans doing curation which includes lot of content creation too.

Paper.li works very well with twitter hastags and does create a page automatically.

So, what are the content curation platforms you use in your daily routines ?

Content Curation in 5 Steps

image

Content Curation is the antidote for Information Overload.

Here are the basic steps done during content curation.

Discover

Discover refers to activity where you decide the topic of your content curation. It can be need of yours, organization or community in general.

Research

One you have decided on the topic you start researching it. This includes collecting all the content which has already been published related to this topic. It includes exploring books, blogs, feeds, twitter, journals and even talking to people and publishing surveys.

Filter

After collection all the related content already published, now is the time to select the quality and unique ones. Rest is all discarded or archived.

Synthesize

This step refers to studying and understanding the selected material. Connecting the isolated content published and figuring out the gaps. Filling those gaps by creating the content. Creating something which is useful and unique.

Share

Share refers to publishing or teaching the new content produced in form of blog, book, presentations, podcast, etc.

I welcome comments from all content curators.

Bank Enterprise Architecture–BIAN and TOGAF come together

image

The Banking Industry Architecture Network (BIAN) and The Open Group today announced a partnership to integrate their individual industry frameworks for specific use in the banking industry. Mapping together these frameworks will accelerate project delivery, while dramatically reducing IT integration costs.

BIAN and The Open Group have collaborated to produce a white paper, in which the core elements of the two individual frameworks have been projected onto each other. This is a practical document, which will be used by enterprise architects within banks and the vendor community who wish to reap the benefits of both architecture frameworks. There are clear synergies in using BIAN’s Service Landscape in combination with TOGAF ®. When applying TOGAF®, an Open Group standard, in a banking environment, the BIAN content will speed up the work by providing banking-specific architecture content. On the flip side, TOGAF provides a structured approach and adds value to the BIAN deliverables for the project approach and capability to perform.

Register for Webinar to understand better.

Secure your Data in Cloud

image

Microsoft has released a new SDK and Management called “Microsoft Codename Trust Services SDK and Management Tool” to encrypt the data before storing it in the cloud.

Microsoft Codename Trust Services is an application-level end to end encryption-based framework that can be used to encrypt stored content. Data publishers can use Trust Services to encrypt data before it is stored in Windows Azure storage or SQL Azure, and authorized subscribers of data can decrypt data after it is read from storage. Using Trust Services encrypts the data, and helps reduce concerns about unauthorized access to data by Windows Azure administrators and/or unauthorized third parties. Using Trust Services helps address data security, privacy, and sovereignty issues that might block or limit typical scenarios, such as distributing data to branch offices, making data accessible to mobile employees or customers, sharing data across businesses, and leveraging cloud scale for computation and analytics.

TOGAF for absolute beginners

TOGAF

TOGAF is an aid which assist in the field of Enterprise Architecture. It provides guidelines, templates, models, framework, tools, methods, processes, etc which cover the entire lifecycle for Enterprise Architecture, right from setting up EA practice or function within an organization to creating and maintaining Enterprise Architectures.

Lets start with some facts:

  • TOGAF - The Open Group Architecture Framework
  • TOGAF, an Open Group Standard, is a proven enterprise architecture methodology and framework.
  • The most recent version is TOGAF 9.1 which was first published in December 2011.
  • First developed in 1995, TOGAF was based on the US Department of Defense Technical Architecture Framework for Information Management (TAFIM)

TOGAF 9.1 can be used for developing a broad range of different enterprise architectures. TOGAF complements, and can be used in conjunction with, other frameworks that are more focused on specific deliverables for particular vertical sectors such as Government, Telecommunications, Manufacturing, Defense, and Finance.

TOGAF assists in creating all four major parts of any Enterprise Architecture:

  1. Business Architecture
  2. Data or Information Architecture
  3. Application Architecture
  4. Technology Architecture

Overall TOGAF documentation is divided into 6 parts which also indicate the ways it helps as shown in above figure:

  1. Architecture Capability : Guides on how to setup EA practice or function within an organization and its roles & responsibilities.
  2. Architecture Development Method (ADM) : This is a core part of TOGAF and provides a step-by-step approach to developing and enterprise architecture.
  3. Guidelines & Techniques : Helps in adapting and customizing ADM based on needs.
  4. Reference Models : provides two architectural reference models, namely the TOGAF Technical Reference Model (TRM), and the Integrated Information Infrastructure Reference Model (III-RM) as foundation.
  5. Enterprise Continuum & Tools : discusses appropriate taxonomies and tools to categorize and store the outputs of architecture activity within an enterprise. The Enterprise Continuum provides a view of the Architecture Repository that shows the evolution of these related architectures from generic to specific, from abstract to concrete, and from logical to physical.
  6. Architecture Content Framework : describes the TOGAF content framework, including a structured metamodel for architectural artifacts, the use of re-usable Architecture Building Blocks (ABBs), and an overview of typical architecture deliverables.

Cloud Security Alliance Summit at RSA 2012

Cloud Security

Summit Agenda

Keynote: “Solving Cloud Access Complexity Through a Broker Model”

The recommended cloud security stack, standards, and operating frameworks have rapidly evolved into a set of production quality best practices for the Enterprise to use to engage each cloud provider. However, as scale is applied, managing 1-n cloud relationships and services across hybrid environments points to a brokered or intermediary model to solve security complexity, aggregate services, & add new value. Intel will present how a Cloud Access Layer & CSA standards managed by IT, Integrators or Provider “brokers” can solve complexity for user and application service interactions with the cloud.

Keynote: “Securing an OpenStack Cloud”

Panel: “Cloud Innovation - The Panel's View on the Next Generation of Cloud Security Devices and Services”

This panel will give attendees insight into next generation cloud security devices and services. This panel will feature experts who will examine the next iteration of innovation in Cloud Security and how these devices and services advance the industry.

Panel: “National and International Security Standards - The Viability of Cross-Jurisdictional Solutions”

Today’s security standards are based on historical, legacy information technologies and don’t necessarily address cloud computing environments in an effective manner. Attempts to update them are an improvement, but will we be able to create a single (or limited) number of standards that will be viable across borders and jurisdictions? This panel discussion will cover the current standards, their applicability and a look into the future of cloud computing standards.

The Green Cloud

image

While each one of us are well aware of the biggest benefits of Cloud Computing which are Cost efficiency and Agility. There is an increasing consensus that technologies like virtualization, data center and cloud computing helps in efficient use of resources like electricity and in turn helps reducing carbon emissions. In summary helps IT shops becoming greener.

  • ICT as an industry contributes  over  2% to  the  overall  global  CO2 emissions,  a similar level as the aviation industry.
  • Recent surveys by Gartner show that sustainable business practices will be a top five priority for more than 60 percent of Western European and North American Chief Executive Officers in the year to come.

“Cooling  currently  accounts for  up to  50% of a  Datacenter’s power consumption, therefore there needs to be a new focus on how businesses can improve the efficiency in how they deliver their IT services which in turn would lead to reductions in both heat generated and power consumed”

So, what are your thoughts on this ? Beyond hardware consolidation, how can you design greener architectures ?

Calligo has some interesting thoughts on this. http://www.calligo.net
